Paul Huen
Paul_001.gifPaul Huen is a recent arrival from the Far East (Boston Massachusetts.) He came out here for the music scene and he wanted to be close to his relatives in San Francisco and Vancouver (while safely avoiding them.) Paul is a classically trained clarinetist and saxophone player. He currently juggles his schedule between freelance gigs and the Circle Band. (There is some circumstantial evidence that he also has a day job.)

Paul tends to be too serious for his own good and to worry more then is healthy. He doesn’t suffer fools very well. He has a fairly well developed dry wit. Paul has opinions about just about everything and he is more then happy to share them. His frequent kvetching hides a stoic fatalistic streak. (He is self-conscious about his swiftly receding hairline, but would sooner shave his head than do anything about it.)

Brian Fitzpatrick
Brian_001.gifBrian Fitzpatrick is Paul’s next-door neighbor at the Tir Al Nog Apartments. He is smart, arrogant, impulsive, erratic, obsessive, lacking in non-financial subtlety, and unable to stand still for over a minute.  His parents own the apartment building.  It is his presence on the third floor (a very nice set of apartments) that keeps the cost so low.  Brian is someone who has to be seen to be believed.  Despite his faults Brian is otherwise brilliant.  He is a mathematical prodigy and an utter wizard at accounting.  He enjoys playing with fractals and game theory in his spare time.  Brian is a legend in his field - both as an object lesson and as something to aspire to.  He is the reason the IRS has a SWAT team.

Brian's career is a series of crash and burn disasters. He has made and lost several fortunes. During one of these periods he bought the Tir Al Nog Apartments and gave them to his parents as a tax write-off.  Brian has either acquired and sold, or been fired from, nearly every major accounting firm on the west coast. (He scares other accountants.)  Despite this erratic job history he has been able to make a comfortable living freelancing.

Despite their antipathy it is rumored that Brian and Nancy knew each other in college.

Brian is totally and utterly in love with Kate.  This annoys Kate.  Brian is not discouraged, but is too much of a gentleman to be more than a nuisance.  Somehow Brian combines putting Kate on a pedestal with a complete belief in gender equality.

Kate Jennersten
Kate.gifKatherine "Kate" Jennersten: Paul's other neighbor.  Bookstore owner, social activist, closet romance novelist and Brian’s obsession.  She is smart, beautiful, serious and responsible.  Kate's greatest frustration is how her ideals keep smashing against the brick wall of reality.  She perseveres by running Lysistrata books, a feminist and leftwing book store, and maintaining a “literary career” of questionable value.

Kate left college with a double major in English and poli-sci, intending to simultaneously be the next Upton Sinclair and Gloria Steinham.  Soon after, to her horror, she discovered a knack for writing trashy romances.  Her first novel, "Passion of the Nightingale", paid off her student loans.  Five others soon followed.  In order to deal with her shame, and the private belief that she was becoming a class traitor, she used the proceeds to subsidize Lysistrata Books.

Kate is passionate and pragmatic about several causes.  She worries though if she is being sensible or is slowly drifting slowly toward the political center, but she doesn’t intend to go without a fight.  She is also increasingly annoyed by many of her fellow activists, feeling that too many lack subtlety and practicality.  All of these things make her show up at the Peach Blossom at least three nights a week.  Kate will tell you it's because she likes Klaus, the bartender, but she knows that he is unavailable.

Michelle Fo
Michelle_001.gifLead singer and keyboardist for the Circle Band. She is very nice, sweet, caring, optimistic and charismatic. Michelle is always willing to provide platitudes and wine to those in need. She sometimes seems to be a bit of a control freak...she isn't bossy...she just assumes you’ll do what she wants...

Nancy Wellington
Nancy_001.gifMichelle's best friend and housemate.  They may seem like an odd combination - Michelle is loving, outgoing, and "sunny"; Nancy is cynical, curmudgeonly, misanthropic, and is the only person who seems uncharmed by Michelle's charisma.

Despite their antipathy it is rumored that Brian and Nancy knew each other in college.

The Circle Band
ImageThe Circle Band is a small local working "fusion" band. (In this context fusion means whatever the clients want to hear) Mostly it plays bebop, swing, blues and whatever else the current contract might require. At the moment this consists of Michelle Fo on vocals and keyboard, Shilo Jackson on Bass, Paul Huen on Clarenet and Saxophone, Fedya Kizhe on Guitar, Kevin Ng on drums, Clarence Gage and Hsin Tsin-hang on trumpet and Sam Hathaway on trombone. (Though Michelle has a surprisingly large rollodex if anyone else is needed. The band sometimes seems to function as Michelle's very own cult of personality and cadre of bodyguards.

Shilo Jackson
Shilo_001.gifThe Circle Band's bass player.  Shilo doesn’t talk much because he's too cool for words.  He is an archetypical bass player: strong, silent, and totally unflappable.  He is happily married, and is totally devoted to Michelle, acting as her principal defender.  Shilo also serves as Paul's main confidant.  He is a great listener.
