No Tempting Fate in Public
It had been a long night and Nancy would be glad when it was over. She wasn’t a fan of going out in public and attending posh galas. Her day job forced her to go too far too many. If Michelle’s plans worked, maybe she wouldn’t have to anymore.
Being Michelle’s substitute for the night was like being a glorified babysitter. Most of the things involving the band itself were routine and Shilo’s problem anyway. This left Nancy with everything that did not involve music, such as talking to the client. Yuki Fubara was friendly enough, in a cold sort of way. She was very supportive and was happy with the job the band was doing.
Unfortunately, little problems seemed to multiply every time she blinked. There was Hsin’s playboy friend, Lin, who was making himself the life of the party, annoying his straight-laced friend. While Nancy found this amusing, he was also flirting with their vocalist, forcing Nancy to drag Wendy back before the next set started, twice.
The other things were more subtle and just affected the band. Paul had to do some emergency maintenance on his saxophone both Shilo and Fedya had broken strings, and Nancy wondered if she should tell someone about the petite woman who had been sneaking around the band’s general vicinity for the last hour. It was probably nothing to worry about. Most of the time she tried to hide when she saw Nancy look at her, badly, or arguing with a short… Man that for some reason, Nancy couldn’t get a good look at and could not remember what he looked like afterward.
Nancy shrugged. She needed a break… and she hadn’t had a chance to try any of the free ice-cream samples yet,
