Bert was hiding behind the potted plant until he knocked it over trying to move it. He seems to have gotten escaped before anyone could do anything about it… so far.
It sounds like Gabriella was on the receiving end of all the trouble Bert’s been causing before. (Don’t worry about looking for it, nobody but her has seen it.)

In Fedya’s defense, Gabriella isn’t looking where she’s going either. Fedya’s probably been rationing his cigarettes as best he can since the squirrel found his emergency stash. Which might explain why he’s so distracted.
Fedya’s smoking has set off fire alarms and sprinklers before. Even though Gabriella doesn’t know that, she probably made the right choice.
Gabriella doesn’t want any favors, especially from someone she says she can’t stand. However, she may have unknowingly worn Fedya down enough that he might actually want to be her hero.
