Halloween Night
Well I just got the first trick or treater of the night. (Well technically my second but I’m not sure if the first one counts as the first one was my next door neighbor’s daughter and they were heading out at 4:30)
I’ve always loved Halloween. Me and my friends used to plan our trick or treating routes with a precision that would rival modern campaigns. When my dad put a moratorium on trick or treating when I was thirteen I moved my creative energies into helping and later running the haunted house at the Providence Athenaeum‘s annual Halloween party (The last year I did it I was even paid for it)
Regretably while I like being in the mood I haven’t really observed the holiday to make matters worse I really haven’t gotten that many trick or treaters which surprised me since I live on a fairly well populated street that is a fairly busy arterial (I assume it’s why I get three denominations of evangelists on a regular basis) Any way I’d observe all of the rituals but for them most part it was just an excuse to buy bulk candy. Last year was different. I had put up a Jack o Lantern out and much to my surprise I suddenly started getting a steady stream of trick or treaters. It hit me that it wasn’t a case of the tradition of trick or treating was dying out (it probably still is but that’s a different story) It was a case of the Jack O Lantern being a signal saying this guy is in on it come knock on the door.”
So anyway here I am again with a damn good Pumpkin and hoping for a repeat. (I better since I bought way too much candy for my usual binge.)
