I’m Failing The Bechdel Test Again

by wpmorse on May 31, 2013 at 10:00 am

I try, really I do, but I keep failing the Bechdel test.

For those who don’t know the Bechdel test also known as the Bechdel-Wallace Test, is a sort of litmus test for female presence in fictional media. The test is named for Alison Bechdel, creator of the comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For, who made it known to the world with this strip. What it gets down to is the film, play, book, comic, etc… has to fit the following criteria.

  1. It includes at least two women (preferably named characters),
  2. who have at least one conversation,
  3. about something other than a man or men.

An alarmingly small number of works pass this test which is of course is Ms. Bechdel’s point.

Anyway I usually have the first two covered; it’s easy when more than half of the cast is female but number three… I keep slipping.

After all even when the topic of this conversation is “what do we do about this idiot” it still doesn’t count.

(note: in hindsight it occurred to me that most of recent scenes with Nancy and her sister count but I have a bad feeling that’s a fluke.)

Friday Museum Sketch

HinkestsanI’d done this figure from the Seattle Art Museum before though I never posted it (or at least I can’t find it in my archives) But I was taking a rushed loop through the galleries on one of my end of the afternoon visits and I happened to see it in a new angle that made it look as if the central figure was being framed by the other five masks. I just had to do it again.

Anyway the figure is wearing a hinkeet’san (sea serpent) headdress. She is surounded by two other hineet’san and three ho’koma (human) masks.

I’m afraid this came out a bit sloppy partially since I only had a half hour before closing and partially from being a bit punchy from a bike ride to Georgetown and back.

Folklife Day 4

Well that’s it for another year. I have to say this year went by like a blur to me without much really sticking out in great detail. Today was mostly spent trying to find more things to draw while trying to keep the paper dry.

Drum Circle.

I decided to put these in their own entry separate from the rest of Folklife pictures because they seemed to stand on their own quite nicely. I tried sketching the Drum Circle with mixed results on one side the organic quality of it gave me lots of ideas for future works of art but because everyone was moving around I might as well have just made stuff up. I tried it again today and just really got into it. It felt as if I was improvising as much as the drummers and the dancers were and it was all I could do to keep up… but in a good way.. Folklife Day 3

Well another day of Folklife has come and went and was perfectly enjoyable. There really weren’t many memorable acts. I’m beginning to wonder if its a case of me obsessing about the sketching so much I didn’t really care.facesssunday01 facesunday02 fiddleguitar FiddlerSunday Girlwithhulahoop JessicaLynne&Cousins twosaxophones Whizipops
