ECCC The Day Before

Well, I’m happy to say I returned from a successful  day of set up for the Emerald City Comicon. I tried to spend most of the day before hand getting as much done in the office as I could. I’m afraid getting ready for and worrying about the con has put me behind quite a bit and for the most part going back and forth between trying to get stuff done and making sure everything was packed it pretty much stayed that way.

I left for downtown threeish. My only regret being was realizing at the bus stop  a book that I had planned to return at the downtown library was still on my desk in the office. Yet another thing to add to my countdown list. The bus was slow due to rain and rush hour. Not helped by the fact my hands were full with… everything which made getting in and out of the bus without inconveniencing anybody… interesting.

But nonetheless I arrived at the convention center without any fuss and registered and went to my table. To my embarrassment I was holding the map upside down and had walked half way across the building before I realized my mistake. turned out my table was barely 100 meters from the registration desk where I had started. Something to laugh about now but not fun when you are carrying three full bags and the components of a large frame.

Set up itself went very well. Over the years I’ve become a lot better at packing so am now able to carry everything on the bus without too much bother. The only real problem is the old frame I use for my banner. You’d think I’d get better at putting together over all these years but no. Every year it’s the same puzzle that takes me a minimum of 15 minutes to get right (It’s not made any easier by having two extra pieces) After I was done I walked about to see how everything else looked. Being able to be around for setup to me is the best reason to have a booth at a con. It’s the best time to meet everyone. However for the day before stuff it’s mostly the industry types who are working so I headed out to do some downtown errands before the evening’s Drink and draw began.

The Drink and Draw was fantastic I met lots of interesting people and stayed much longer than I had planned.

Look forward to seeing them and lot’s more people today!

Well This is it

image001Well I’m psyched today is convention eve. I’m just putting together everything I need for setting up at the convention center. That will consist mostly of the furniture my sign and my book stands and some some supplies for making signs. Tape… String… (for reasons that have yet to be explained to me you always have to bring string to a convention.) Business cards, promotional cards and of course, swag. When I say swag I mean buttons and books! It’s funny with the books how pessimism and optimism contraduct each other in fascinating ways. Despite all of my experience I keep worrying… “Do I have enough? What if I sell out?” Which is immediatly followed up by… “oh. So you think you’re going to sell some.”

I’ve got my helper’s lined up… well… at least I think I do one tends to be annoyingly laid back when it comes to replying to his messages on facebook and it was embarrassing to discover I couldn’t make heads or tails out of the floor map when I was trying to give the other one directions.

But this is the reason to go to Thursday setup even when you don’t really have to… It get’s all of the worst case scenario stuff out of your system and best of all even if it’s only going to be industry types there that early but it’s so much fun! There’s something fascinating about looking behind the scenes and getting to shake hands with the men behind the curtain.

Finally there’s going to be a great opportunity to network at a Drink and Draw event this evening which will hopefully be a great opportunity to meet fellow artists. Networking is something I always try to get better at. (It’s tricky, sometimes I worry in trying to find potential colleagues I come off worse than a fanboy at these things)

Anyway zero hour people, can’t wait to see as many of you as possible at table c-12!

Just Got an Orca Card

I admit it I’ve been putting this off for far too long. But I finally got around to getting my brand new Orca Card! Most of my delay was due to the Home office thing. Despite being a proud metro user I am even prouder pedestrian and for me the definition of walking distance is “anywhere I can get to in an hour and a half.” Because of that these days unless I’m in a hurry I really only use Metro or Sound Transit when I have to go downtown and since I don’t do that very often I’ve been more than happy to make do with paying cash. The thing is thanks to bank cards and such most of the time I’m happily cashless. I rarely have more then twenty dollars in my wallet and sometimes I tbink, somewhat ironically, that singles and change are more costly than larger denominations because you need them for the bus, and the need to have five dollars on you for a round trip gets to be a pain… and with Emerald City Comiccon coming up very soon I realized I was going to need a lot more than one round trip. To make matters worse I had forgotten to put the change for a trip into my walllet so on my way home from Georgetown I took the plunge.

It was a bit of an interesting experience trying to figure out just how many rides to put onto my card (and the deadpan expression the teller kept giving me did not me feel any smarter.) But being able to have a card just for the bus that I can recharge whenever I want is going to make life so much easier.

CircleBandButtonsbag

Now I am officially stoked about the Emerald City Comiccon FedEx just dropped off my Circle Band Buttons. I had been waiting just long enough to have all of the traditional nervousness about complications about delivery and design.  I had worried enough to check that I’d given them the correct address but rest assured they are here and ready for sale in another three days! In hindsight I know to respect the bleed edge just a little bit more next time but otherwise they look great!

Happy Birthday Tex Avery!

A very happy birthday to Mr. Tex Avery one of the great pioneers in animation. I’ve always loved his surrealistic slapstick. So to celebrate here’s his 1950 MGM classic, Ventriloquist Cat.

Tuesday Rhapsodies

Once again I am really scraping the barrel. But here we go… This week’s Rhapsody is the Warthog Rhapsody an unused song from Lion King   recycled as “That’s All I Need” in Lion King 1/2. I confess I’ve only seen little bits of this direct to video film and what I saw, other than a few neat musical numbers, did not impress me. As far as I can tell the idea behind this (other than let’s stretch this franchise as far as it will go was) Was the thought “Well since Lion King is our adaptation of Hamlet, let’s do our version of  Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead!” which lead to over of half an hour of Timon and Pumba bumbling around in the background of all of the scenes in Lion King. Needless to say it didn’t work for me is a bit of an understatement.

But as I said a few of the musical numbers are fun and this is no exception.

Enjoy.
