There are some very good reasons to do research before writing a story. In this case, I needed to know what sort of technical difficulties a saxophonist might have at a gig. Before all this all knew what could happen,  came from the Simpsons episode Lisa’s Pony.  After I did the research, I found that problems with a reed would be gradual not something that would catch someone by surprise. One could replace one at their pleasure. Besides a professional wouldn’t be able to rely on someone going to get one for them at the music store for them.

With a little bit of reading, I found that a much more likely candidate for breaking is the pad on a saxophone’s cup which controls the pitch of the instrument. It can come loose, or fall off creating a huge inconvenience. I found several quick fixes that would allow the musician to get through the rest of the night.
