Friday Sketch

waiting
Today’s sketch is a little something I did while waiting t0 get into “Thor: The Dark World”

The real fun of these free screenings is they’re very much a social event you meet a lot of interesting people while waiting out front almost giving these things the feel of a geeks tailgating party.

This one was pretty thin, mostly because it was  Tuesday night and I don’t think anyone was really expecting anything from the Thor sequel. So I spent most of the time drawing. This one suffers from trying to capture the look of a crowd in under ten minutes but I mostly like the look of it.

Comedy of Errors

MalwareWell today was one of those days where you wake up turn on the computer and find out that you don’t need coffee after all.

So I was checking the page only to find that yesterday’s strip still up. This is usually my fault of my forgetting to put the next day’s strip in the can either because I thought I had loaded all of the strips for the week,  was running late… or just plain forgot. When this happens I immediately try to fix the problem as quickly as possible and hope nobody notices.

So imagine my surprise when I started to do this I discovered that not only had I forgot to load it I hadn’t even created the gif to load or made any record of any of the storyline in my comicstrip database, something I distinctly remember doing. THe first thing of course was to create the gif which I did but in the process the Photoshop action I was using was acting all wonky and merged all of the strips layers and saved it as a 72dpi image before it closed everything.

Thank goodness for Apple’s time machine. Most of the time I don’t like it very much. A lot of the time it feels slow, tedious, and more trouble than it’s worth but for all the times you really screw up on your file management you are really glad it is there. So having replaced the ruined file with the retreaved good one I went and updated the database. While I was at I found a duplicate entry of the strip that may have been the original file and the cause of today’s curfluffle was just a case of the final reason to start the day without the current strip not being up entering the wrong date when you put it in in the first place.

On the plus side I’m sure I’m going to stay focused on the strip for the rest of the day.

Tuesday Rhapsodies

Today’s Rhapsody is “A Shropshire Lad” by George Butterworth based on the collection of poems by A.E. Housman. Don’t let the singing in the beginning of the clip scare you off it’s really quite epic.

VarahaToday, it’s back to the Seattle Asian Art Museum’s Indian Sculpture collection. This time it’s Vishnu‘s third incarnation, Varaha the Boar done in sandstone from North central India in the 11th century,

I’d done this one once before. But I think this one turned out much better.

Thor: The Dark World

I confess I had not been particularly excited about Thor: The Dark World. The trailer really didn’t do much for me and the main reason for me to be excited about the first movie (Kenneth Branagh) was no longer an issue.

But I’d been given a free pass so to the movie theaters I went.

It was a lot better than I expected though considering Alan Taylor’s work on Game of Thrones and many other HBO shows I shouldn’t have been surprised.  All and all it was an enjoyable romp with all the action you would hope for in an action comicbook thriller as well as lots of self referential humor.

As always Tom Hiddleston owned it as Loki getting more from a raised eyebrow than others did with over a minute of dialogue. After that it was a bit of a disappointment that Christopher Eccleston wasn’t given anything to do beyond act menacing.

Definitely worth everybody’s time.

A Most Crazy Day

Well everyone this is a day of which I am glad to be done with. As I mentioned in the last post I had the exterminator coming to deal with my Cockroach problem (and trust me, when you start referring to the glue trap you are replacing as the “week’s harvest” you have a problem). The big problem was I had to clear all of my surfaces, drawers and shelves to be ready for them and I had until noon to take care of it. For most of the morning it felt like a loosing battle. Not only did the time seem to pass like nothing, I was also beginning to worry that I was running out of floor space for the exterminator to work.

I somehow managed to get everything ready in time and the end result was my apartment looked like a bomb had gone off (albeit with all the debris stacked in nice piles.) My landlady and the exterminator arrived with time to spare. It turned out that since the cockroaches had enough of a beachhead that we were going to have to do the whole thing over again in three weeks. Which makes me wonder whether putting everything away right away is worth it.

Any way I headed out so as not to be around for the poison. I decided to stop by my favorite bike shop to have them look at what I hoped was a minor problem with my back wheel. Turned out it wasn’t and I had to leave it there to have a tire and chain replaced and I ended up walking home.

Once home I got to sweep up roach corpses which was at least kind of cathartic.
